Danger is ever-present in motor racing, with some drivers paying the ultimate price. Triple world champion Jackie Stewart once estimated he lost 57 friends in an 11-year period to racing accidents, while 1976 world champion James Hunt had his own take on the hazards of the sport. "I have no doubt that 90 per cent of the people who come to motor racing do so secretly hoping to see a spectacular crash," he said. "That is entirely their privilege. Equally it is my privilege to make a great deal of money out of them for what I do. No-one forces me to drive a car for a living."
